So, I have decided to start a blog. Why?
From an early age I caught the train bug. I was born into a family of trainspotters and my parents bought me my first 00 gauge model train set when I was a young ‘un. Although very basic with just a tank engine, a small number of wagons, some track and a controller, I still loved setting it up and playing with it. I have been interested in trains ever since.
My Dad and I visited many preserved railways in the UK but, because I was only born in the 70’s, I missed the steam engines in their heyday. For one of my first real jobs I used to commute to and from Leeds on both the East and West Coast mainlines, so I have had my fair share of experience of diesel and electric trains. But, there is nothing like a good steam engine.
I decided from early on that at some point in my life I would have my own model rail layout to run my own steam (and possibly early diesel) trains and have never been fortunate enough to have the space until now. A large shed at the end of the garden allowed me to construct a 12 foot by 8 foot base board about a couple of years or so ago. My thinking being, firstly get some decent foundations built, then start the fun part – the planning process of incorporating my “must have features”.
So, I built three frames. Here’s one (of three)…
Put on the tops and add the legs. Again, one of three…
I then planned and started building.
I have partly laid track. I have also added some must have scenary for which I will be putting up some photos in the coming weeks to give you an idea of where I am now at. I think I know where I am going but am currently at a bit of an impass in that I have perhaps done a little too much research. Too many ideas, but not necessarily the time, experience or money to be able to do it all. Hence, the reason for starting this blog. I wanted to share my thoughts and experience as my layout evolves. I am eager to receive feedback and discuss ideas with fellow enthusiasts. I have a fair few ideas so am aiming to post at least once or twice a week.
Here’s hoping.
